One of the priority directions of the National Administration of Penitentiaries in its efforts to modernize the prison system and to line up its activities to the best existing practices at European level is to increase the representation of criminal penalty educational function. This aim is achieved by strengthening the efforts geared toward learning, training and willingness to assume the values that are indispensable for the exercise of an active and responsible role in society by the individuals.
Under these circumstances, the initiative to celebrate the Day of Education in prisons, on the 13th of October, was developed by a series of events that take place in all establishments. The project, already reaching its Second Edition, enrolls in a number of steps to raise awareness of criminal policy makers at European level, with regard to the issue of the reintegration of prisoners.

A significant dimension of the activities celebrating the Day of Education in prisons is the trans-disciplinary. The project intends to emphasize the excellent relationship between school and prison, at educational level, and the prevention function of deviant behaviors of custodial sentences. Visits of teachers and pupils from schools in prisons, as well as conferences taken by the penitentiary staff in educational units, throughout the project, highlights the active role assumed by the penitentiary service at community level.
