8th EUROPEAN CONFERENCE OF DIRECTORS AND CO-ORDINATORS OF PRISON EDUCATION
Lucerne, Switzerland
Hotel Hermitage 9th – 12th September 2010

Dear Sir/Madam

The 7th European Conference of Directors and Co-ordinators of Prison Education re-quested the Prisons of the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland to host the conference in 2010.

I am now writing to inform you about the 8th European Conference of Directors and Co-ordinators of Prison education. It will take place from the 9th to the 12th Septem-ber 2010 at the Hotel Hermitage in Lucerne, Switzerland. The conference is hosted by the Prisons of the Canton of Zurich in association with the European Prison Education Association (EPEA). Lucerne is a beautiful town in the heart of Switzerland and about 1 hour by car or train far off the airport of Zurich.

Previous conferences of this kind were held in Poland (1994), Estonia (1996), Cyprus (1998), Malta (2000), England (2004), The Czech Republic (2006) and Sweden (2008). The conference is intended for those who administer or manage prison education at national or state level. We want to make sure this conference is attended by the widest representation across Europe, so please forward this invitation to the right person, whether 'Co-ordinator', 'Director' or 'Advisor', responsible for implementing policy in relation to prison education in your country or state.

As with previous conferences, the agenda will concentrate on exchanges of experi-ence in relation to developing the education of prisoners, including the practical problems and solutions that arise in this field. There will also be the opportunity to visit a prison education centre as part of the programme. Sessions will be held in both plenary and workshop form and will offer plenty of opportunity for discussion and networking.

A draft programme is attached, along with an application form. A more detailed pro-gramme will be circulated at a later date once the programme is finalised. The official language of the conference is English.

Those wishing to participate in the conference should forward the attached application form no later than 21th March 2010 by email or fax. We will then send confirmation of your registration along with detailed information on how to pay the conference fee, expected to be approximately 650 Euro, covering the cost of the conference, travel to the prison, accommodation for three nights, and all meals. In case you have any problem to pay the conference fee for a delegate, please let us know. I'm confident, that we will find a way to deal with this issue.

Participation by more than one representative from one country will be considered, but please bear in mind that there is a limit to the overall number participating in the conference.

Sincerely Yours
Victor Gähwiler General Governor Prisons of the Canton of Zurich
