A Computer Science teacher at Agrupamento de Escolas Nuno Álvares, in Castelo Branco, where he teaches the Secondary Education IT Technicians Course at the Prison Establishment of Castelo Branco since 2012/2013.

This year (2020), he presented his teaching project for the “Global Teacher Prize Portugal” and he was a finalist for the prize (watch the video used for the candidates presentation as well as a former student’s testimony:

His work is based on helping students to invest in their education, since the life path which led them to imprisonment made them disbelieve in their potential.

Being aware that wanting to learn is probably more important than one’s skills, he decided to deal with this lack of motivation, using the ARCS Model of Motivation (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) amongst other distinguishing complements.

His commitment in this process has been fruitful, and several students are now getting Higher Education. So, focusing on students, using different methods, and combining them by choosing the best of each promotes the improvement of the teaching-learning process.

This way, the features of the Project and Collaborative Work Methodologies present themselves as a viable solution capable of enhancing motivation strategies based on active learning principles which are focused on the student. Its linking to real-world practice is a driver for the students’ lifelong learning.

This teaching project is an innovating one worldwide, namely the setting-up of a Computer Recycling Centre at the Prison Establishment of Castelo Branco with the partnership of several local companies.

Professor de Informática no Agrupamento de Escolas Nuno Álvares, concelho de Castelo Branco, onde leciona, desde 2012/2013, o Curso de Técnicos de Informática de nível Secundário, no Estabelecimento Prisional de Castelo Branco.

O seu trabalho tem por base ajudar os seus alunos a apostarem na educação, dado que o trajeto que os levou a uma situação de reclusão os faz acreditar menos no seu potencial.

Consciente que a disposição para a aprendizagem é, talvez, mais importante do que a capacidade para a mesma, o Professor Paulo Serra enfrenta esta desmotivação com o modelo motivacional ARCS (Atenção, Relevância, Confiança, Satisfação), entre outros complementos diferenciadores.

Com o seu envolvimento e dedicação começam já a surgir vários alunos a prosseguirem os seus estudos no Ensino Superior. Deste modo, diversificar as metodologias combinando-as e escolhendo o melhor de cada, tendo em atenção os alunos, contribui para a melhoria do processo de ensino-aprendizagem, e esse é o seu objetivo.

Desta forma, as metodologias de Trabalho Projeto e Trabalho Colaborativo pelas suas características, apresentam-se como solução capaz de implementar as estratégias de reforço da motivação, baseando-se em princípios da aprendizagem ativa, centrada no aluno, sendo a sua ligação a uma componente prática e real um motor de aprendizagem para estes.

Surge assim algo inovador a nível mundial, nomeadamente a criação de um centro de reciclagem de computadores no Estabelecimento Prisional de Castelo Branco com importantes parcerias de empresas da área.
