Cologne women’s prison celebrates carnival before carnival in the city itself starts

Dancing, swaying, singing: The inmates of a women’s prison in Cologne celebrated carnival on Wednesday evening. Without alcohol and under supervision. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was lively. (Translation of the spoken word by EPEA supported by a translation tool).
Starting signal for the “fifth” season of the year. The inmates at Cologne Prison in the Ossendorf district have already celebrated carnival. How does it feel behind bars?
Derya (Inmate): “Yes, there’s more atmosphere here. Outside, you’re more in a small group. Here we’re just together and we all have fun.”
Katarina (Inmate): “There’s a bit of something missing, the alcohol of course, but we’re in a good mood.”
For a few hours, the incarcerated women are allowed to dance, sing and cheer on the band on stage in disguise, supported by the official Cologne carnival organising committee.
Christoph Kuckelhorn (Carnival Committee President): “Our aim is to give people two or three hours of freedom, especially in this situation, to get out of their everyday routine in prison and really enjoy life again. And you can see the effect that this has here.”
The prison officers organise such events in the prison every year. To avoid trouble, the right selection of participants is crucial for them.
Frank Prösdorf (prison recreation officer): “We organise a lot of concerts here. So, nothing has ever happened. But, of course, you always have to keep the security aspect in mind. They are offenders, obviously.” See the movie here

Kölner Frauengefängnis feiert Karneval

Tanzen, schunkeln, singen: Die Insassinnen eines Kölner Frauengefängnisses haben bereits am Mittwochabend Karneval gefeiert. Ohne Alkohol und unter Aufsicht. Stimmung kam trotzdem auf.
Startschuss zur «fünften» Jahreszeit. In der Kölner Justizvollzugsanstalt im Stadtteil Ossendorf haben die Insassinnen bereits Karneval gefeiert. Wie fühlt es sich an hinter Gittern?
Derya (Gefängnisinsassin): «Ja hier ist mehr Stimmung. Draussen ist man eher in einer kleinen Gruppe. Hier sind wir halt zusammen und haben halt alle Spass.»
Katarina (Gefängnisinsassin): «Es fehlt ein bisschen was, der Alkohol natürlich, aber wir haben gute Laune.»
Für ein paar Stunden dürfen die inhaftierten Frauen verkleidet ausgelassen tanzen, singen und die Band auf der Bühne anfeuern, unterstützt vom offiziellen Kölner Karnevals-Organisationskomitee.
Christoph Kuckelhorn (Karnevalskomitee-Präsident): «Das ist unser Anspruch den Menschen gerade in dieser Situation jetzt auch mal zwei, drei Stunden Unbefangenheit zu geben, aus dem Alltag in der Haft auch auszusteigen und noch mal so richtig zu leben. Und da sieht man hier, was das auslöst.»
Die Gefängniswärter organisieren jedes Jahr solche Veranstaltungen in der JVA. Um Ärger zu vermeiden, ist für sie dabei die richtige Auswahl der Teilnehmerinnen entscheidend.
Frank Prösdorf (Freizeitbeauftragter): «Wir machen ja viele Konzerte hier. Also es ist noch nie irgendwas passiert. Aber, man muss den Sicherheitsgedanken natürlich auch immer im Auge haben. Es sind natürlich Straftäterinnen.» Link zum Video
